In 2003 a building that was an eating place in a former life, but had been vacant for years. Worked in animal care before and was distressed at the number of perfectly sweet animals that had to be put down, mostly because of a lack of medical care. Since Dogs with paws for veterans opened, the organization has saved over 6,000 dogs and puppies and they have done this with a small, but dedicated group of volunteers and a shoestring budget.

A dog with Paws also has perfectly healthy, well-adjusted and loving human beings for adoption. Unluckily, times are tough for Dogs with paws for vets. Like many non-profits, the economy has them struggling. Costs are going up and as more and more people lose their homes, they are giving up their dog companions. The shelter currently has 65 dogs, which is almost at capacity.
